Dear Families and Staff,
I want to thank our students, staff, and administration for their excellent work in handling today’s emergency evacuation due to the bomb threat. We have conducted emergency evacuation drills to off site locations before so we had our plan ready to implement. As stated earlier, a bomb threat was discovered on one computer monitor in a HS classroom. It stated that a bomb would go off at noon today. At that point law enforcement was contacted and HS students evacuated to the MS/Elementary campus. When law enforcement arrived the decision was made to evacuate all school buildings on the main campus. Students were sent to the east end of the elementary play-field. Plans were immediately put in place to transport students to our two off campus locations, the Centennial Center in Cle Elum where elementary students were sent and Swiftwater Learning Center in Roslyn, where MS and HS students were sent. Bus drivers were contacted and buses were sent to the school campus to transport students to the off site locations. This went very smooth and by 12:45 all students were off the main campus and taken to the off site locations. Our only concern was that this occurred right before lunch and we were not able to secure any food items prior to evacuation so we had some hungry kids. We will evaluate that aspect of our plan and will better address this issue in the future. Law enforcement had already established a command center and was taking appropriate steps to search all school facilities. I wish that I could have sent out a notification through school messenger earlier but everyone was focused on the safety and welfare of our students and we did not have access to the buildings. As soon as the District office was searched and cleared we established the command center there and that is when I sent out the first notification. As new information became available I sent out other notifications to keep you informed. I know when we deal with these unfortunate situations it is very concerning and we communicated factual information as quickly as we got it. Thank you for your patience. Law enforcement are now actively investigating this matter and working hard to find out who is responsible for this serious safety concern. At this time all school buildings on the main campus, other than the district office, are still locked down until a complete and thorough search of the buildings occur by law enforcement. We are confident this will occur this afternoon/evening and at this time are scheduled to be open for school tomorrow. If anything were to change you will be notified. For these reasons all school activities are cancelled for this evening with the exception of the HS Basketball/Cheer Awards Banquet scheduled at Suncadia. As new information becomes available we will keep you informed. Thank you for your cooperation, flexibility, and support of this very serious matter. The good news is our students remained safe during the whole ordeal. Feel free to contact me or one of our principals if you have any further questions.
