Students build math grit in Continental Math League

Fourth and fifth graders took on a math challenge this year through the Continental Math League (CML), integrated into their WIN block. The league emphasized real-world problem- solving and higher-level thinking by engaging students in non-routine, multi-step story problems and visual puzzles.

In small collaborative groups, students practiced strategies like working backwards, estimating, using charts or tables, and writing equations. Instruction focused on identifying patterns, key quantities, and choosing the right approach for each problem.

Each month, students participated in a timed “meet,” solving six complex problems independently. Top scorers received medals to celebrate their achievement.

It’s been amazing to see students persevere,” said Kristen Anderson, the district’s Highly Capable Coordinator. “They don’t give up when a strategy doesn’t work. They ask questions, try again, and show serious mathematical grit.”

Student Reflections:

  • It was a challenge, but I got better at solving word problems.” – Vaden, Grade 5

  • The problems made me think outside the box.” – Finley, Grade 5

  • I improved by learning how to pick out the important info.” – Josie, Grade 4

Through persistence and teamwork, our fourth and fifth graders built confidence as problem solvers and collaborators. We’re proud of their effort, progress, and the curiosity they brought to each challenge!
