Future Problem Solvers

Students in the Cle Elum Roslyn School district are  participating in a state and international competition called Future Problem Solving.  Teams of four students in states and countries across the world are presented with the same topic and are allowed a maximum of two hours to read the Future Scene, write 16 problems, one underlying problem, 16 solutions, 5 criteria to evaluate the solutions and one final Action Plan that are associated with that specific topic.  Students can also elect to compete individually; the questions and solutions for individuals is reduced to 8 each.
At the middle school level students participate in FPS as an elective class (not a club) where as high school students participate in FPS as an extracurricular activity.

Students  spend approximately three weeks researching the general topic and discussing possible problems and solutions before they enter the competition room.  Once the competition begins, students are allowed only pencils, paper, a calculator, dictionary and thesaurus to be present with them.  All knowledge that they gained in their research must be memorized and applied to the Future Scene that is presented at that time.
For more information on FPS, please see the Washington Future Problem Sovling website.
