ASVAB Information

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)

The ASVAB is a career exploration and aptitude test offered to high school students nationwide. It measures skills in areas such as math, science, reading, and mechanical comprehension. While it is commonly used as part of the enlistment process for the U.S. military, the ASVAB also provides valuable insights into a student’s strengths and possible career pathways; military and civilian.

Requirements:

  • The ASVAB is typically offered to Sophomores - Seniors

  • Students do not need to have plans to join the military in order to take the test.

  • Scores can help students explore career options, meet certain graduation pathway requirements in Washington State, and may be used for military entrance if they choose that path after graduation.

  • Students interested in taking the ASVAB should contact the counseling office for upcoming test dates and registration information.

PSAT / SAT Information

PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test)

The PSAT is typically offered to sophomores and juniors. It helps students practice for the SAT and provides valuable feedback on academic strengths. For juniors, the PSAT also serves as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Scores are not sent to colleges but can connect students with scholarship and career opportunities.

SAT

The SAT is a college entrance exam accepted by most universities across the country. It measures skills in reading, writing, and math. Students generally take the SAT during their junior or senior year. Some colleges require SAT scores for admission, while others are now test optional; meaning students may choose whether to submit scores.

Requirements:

  • The PSAT is recommended for 10th and 11th graders (with 11th grade being the year it counts for National Merit).

  • The SAT is typically taken in spring of junior year and/or fall of senior year if students are applying to 4-year colleges.

  • Students planning to attend a 2-year college or technical program may not need the SAT but should check admission requirements.

  • For upcoming test dates, registration details, and fee waiver information, please visit the counseling office or College Board
