Strengthening Youth-Law Enforcement Relationships at CERSD

On February 6th, during the Elementary School’s Character Strong assembly, Chief Albo presented selected students an award called “The Citizenship Award”. The Citizenship Award is a newly formed award, in partnership with the Cle Elum-Roslyn Police Department, The Cascade Prevention Coalition, and Cle Elum-Roslyn Elementary School.

CERES Citizenship Awards

Citizenship at CERES means being a positive member of our school community by doing things like following rules, helping others, and making our community a better place. This award is meant to recognize both students who have always shown citizenship above and beyond our basic expectations as well as students who have shown significant improvement in their use of good citizenship.

Traits of Good Citizenship:

1. Respect and Kindness: The student consistently shows respect and empathy towards others.

  • Kindness and Empathy: Consistently shows compassion, offers help to students who are struggling or upset, and includes all classmates in activities.

  • Conflict Resolution: Attempts to solve minor disagreements peacefully using appropriate words and seeks help from an adult when necessary.

  • Respects Differences: Appreciates and is kind to students from diverse backgrounds and abilities.

  • Uses Good Manners: Shows polite behavior toward teachers, staff, and peers (e.g., uses "please" and "thank you," listens when others are speaking).

2. Responsibility to School Values: The student demonstrates excellent effort, organization, and accountability.

  • Follows Rules: Consistently follows classroom and school-wide expectations and routines without constant reminders.

  • Preparation: Comes to class consistently, and is prepared with necessary materials (e.g., completed homework, pencils, books).

  • Accountability: Takes ownership of their actions, apologizes sincerely when they make a mistake, and attempts to fix the situation.

3. Cooperation and Teamwork: The student is a positive and helpful member of the classroom and school community.

  • Cooperation: Works well with all classmates in small groups and whole-class activities, sharing materials and ideas fairly. Plays cooperatively and fairly at recess.

  • Helpfulness: Volunteers to help teachers or peers with classroom tasks (e.g., cleaning up, distributing materials) without being asked.

  • Positive Attitude: Maintains a cheerful and optimistic outlook, even when faced with a challenging task.

  • Respects School Property: Takes care of classroom materials, playground equipment, and school facilities.

While many of these traits are individually recognized during one month of the year, this award gives staff the opportunity to recognize students showing multiple traits at any time of the year.

We are incredibly grateful to the Cle Elum-Roslyn Police Department for their continued partnership, presence, and commitment to fostering healthy relationships with students throughout the CERSD community.
