OUR BIG PICTURE LEARNING SCHOOL

Swiftwater Learning Center is a Big Picture Learning school. Our mission is to achieve excellence through personal growth, interest based learning, and real world experiences in a supportive, family-like community where students design projects based around passions. As a school we leave the classroom to learn, we dig deeper, and we build community!

A few things that we have done so far this year are:

  • CISPUS Learning Center in Randle, WA. Students went 2 nights for team building and confidence building for the start of the new school year.
  • Big Picture Learning Convening in Chelan with other BPL schools in our area (Twisp, Davenport, Chelan, Quincy, Ellensburg). This was a leadership conference where we interacted and made connections with other BPL students.
  • Staff took 3 students to Kansas City, MO to participate in the Big Picture Learning, Big Bang Conference last summer.
  • Students participated in the annual Veterans Day Assembly (speaking opportunity/custom made stickers passed out to Vets in the community).
  • The Mental Health Club (We Are Only Human) participated in the Boo Elum and Christmas Parade.
  • We will start working on our plant sale in March and then have the actual sale May 20-22.
  • We tour colleges as the students arrange them.
  • Students had a Career Exploration Day at KVH in Ellensburg.

We invite people from all different careers to come and talk to our students about what it is they do and what they had to do to get there. The more jobs/careers that our students are exposed to the better. We are always looking for opportunities for our students and add and change our schedule to accommodate. As relationships grow between students and businesses we explore opportunities for job shadows which then could lead to internships.

Some projects that our students have been working on so far this year include:

  • Mechanics
  • Wire Jewelry Making
  • Inflation
  • Natural Pigments
  • Costume Making
  • Music/Song Writing
  • Ceramics
  • Van Life/Adulting
  • Logo Design
  • Music
  • Crocheting/Hand Sewing
  • Meditation
  • Voice Acting
