October is National Learning Disabilities Awareness Month and Washington’s Disability History and Awareness Month—a time to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities and strengthen understanding and inclusion in our communities.
In recognition of the month, Cle Elum-Roslyn’s elementary school welcomed the IDEA Project during the week of October 19. The nonprofit brings interactive disability education into schools through engaging assemblies and hands-on activity stations. Its activities help students learn about differences in communication, sensory processing, and physical abilities while encouraging empathy, respect, and friendship. The experience reinforces an important message: everyone has strengths, everyone has something to contribute, and everyone deserves to belong.
The IDEA Project is one of the many ways we help students celebrate differences and build a stronger sense of belonging. The IDEA Project will return to our district November 23 and 24 to bring this learning experience to our middle school students.
